    Description

West- Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi - first half 20th century
The 'Bateba' figure is a spiritual fetish figure which protects against evil spirits and functions between the 'Thil' (Village Spirit) and the inhabitants. The word 'Bateba' can be literally translated as 'wooden carved figure'. The use of these statues is commonly used among the Lobi people. This example is a 'Bateba Phuwe' (common type) and represents a female figure with one arm stretched towards the skies. The other hand is placed on her side. The face is in typical Lobi style and the coiffure was symmetrically carved. The long pronounced neck is quite unusual and so is the hair.
Condition: Very good condition, no repairs, fine natural patina.
